Mumbai: Mumbai's daily commuters could soon see significant changes to their travel routine as Central Railway prepares to increase the number of AC local train services by converting some existing non-AC trains under a revised timetable.
Mumbai's suburban railway network is set for a major timetable revision that could change the daily commute for thousands of passengers. Central Railway has decided to increase the number of air-conditioned local train services, with 12 additional AC trains planned under the new schedule.

At present, Central Railway operates 108 AC local services every day. Once the proposed changes are implemented, the total number of AC services will rise to 120. Of the existing services, 80 AC locals currently operate on the main route.
Rather than introducing entirely new trains, railway authorities plan to convert some existing non-AC local services into AC trains. The move is aimed at improving passenger comfort, particularly during Mumbai's hot and humid weather conditions, when demand for air-conditioned travel tends to rise sharply.
Officials are currently working on the revised timetable and identifying which services will be converted. The final schedule is expected to provide commuters with greater clarity on train timings and route-wise changes before implementation.
The popularity of AC local trains has steadily grown in recent years, with many passengers opting for the added comfort despite higher fares. Railway authorities believe the expansion will help meet increasing demand for premium suburban travel options.
However, the decision may also raise concerns among regular commuters who depend on non-AC local services. Since the additional AC trains will come from converting existing services, some passengers may worry about a reduction in the availability of standard suburban trains.
