Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh: In a shocking case highlighting the extreme pressure faced by medical aspirants, a 20-year-old youth from Uttar Pradesh allegedly amputated his own foot to qualify for admission under the disability quota after failing the NEET exam twice.

Police said Suraj Bhaskar, a resident of Khalilpur village in Jaunpur district, took the drastic step after becoming mentally distressed over repeated failures in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), the gateway to medical education in India.

Investigators recovered a diary belonging to Suraj in which he had written, “I will become an MBBS doctor in 2026,” revealing the deep emotional drive behind his extreme decision.

Police said Suraj allegedly planned to present himself as a victim of a violent attack to claim benefits under the disability quota for medical admissions.

Brother alerted police after staged attack story

The case came to light after Suraj’s elder brother, Akash Bhaskar, approached the police, claiming that unidentified assailants had attacked Suraj at night, leaving him unconscious with a severed foot before fleeing.

Based on the complaint, a case was registered and the investigation was later handed over to City Circle Officer Goldy Gupta, officials said.

During questioning, police found multiple inconsistencies in Suraj’s account. A forensic examination of his phone and interrogation of a woman linked to the case further raised suspicion.

“The accused tried to mislead the investigation with a fabricated story, but his claims did not stand scrutiny during sustained questioning and examination of evidence,” police said.

Mental stress after repeated NEET failures

Police said Suraj had failed to clear NEET twice and had slipped into severe mental stress, which allegedly pushed him towards the extreme act.

He believed becoming physically disabled would make him eligible for admission under the disability quota.

Police are seeking legal opinion on applicable criminal charges, while Line Bazar Station House Officer Satish Singh confirmed that Suraj is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital.
