Mumbai: Two people were killed and three others injured after being struck by a suburban train near Sandhurst Road railway station in south Mumbai on Thursday evening, officials said.

The incident occurred around 7 pm, shortly after suburban services on the Central Railway line were thrown into disarray due to a flash strike by employees’ unions. The protest erupted over the filing of an FIR against two Central Railway engineers in connection with the June 9 Mumbra train accident.

According to officials, the victims had alighted from the wrong side of the train and were walking along the tracks when they were hit. All five were rushed to hospital, where two were declared dead on arrival. Of the three injured, two discharged themselves against medical advice, while one remains under treatment.

Earlier in the evening, train services were paralysed at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) after Central Railway employees stopped operations in protest against the FIR. The flash strike, which began at 5.50 pm, halted suburban services for nearly an hour during the peak rush, leading to heavy overcrowding at major stations and inside trains.

Central Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Swapnil Nila, told PTI that employees had prevented motormen and train managers from operating trains between 5.50 pm and 6.45 pm. Services were restored only after senior officials intervened and assured protesters that the matter would be taken up with state authorities.

The FIR, filed by Thane Railway Police, names a senior section engineer and a section engineer under Section 125(a)(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for acts endangering life or personal safety. The case relates to the Mumbra accident of 9 June, in which four passengers died and nine were injured after falling from overcrowded trains passing each other on a sharp curve between Diva and Mumbra stations.

Police said several commuters standing on the footboards fell onto the tracks after their backpacks brushed against one another.
