Massive crowds at Patna Junction for Chhath Puja. Passengers struggle for seats, even climbing through windows.

Patna Junction witnessed a chaotic scene as thousands of passengers, desperate to secure seats on crowded trains heading to various parts of Bihar, were seen climbing through train windows. The heavy rush on Tuesday, driven by migrants returning home from cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata for Chhath Puja, has overwhelmed railway facilities, leading to overcrowding and safety concerns.
Platforms at Patna Junction, as well as Rajendra Nagar, Patliputra, Danapur, and Patna Sahib stations, are packed with travellers heading to destinations across North Bihar, including Saharsa, Supaul, Madhubani, Bhagalpur, and Purnia.
Several trains, notably the Janhit Express to Saharsa, Kosi Express to Purnia, and Vikramshila Express to Bhagalpur, are struggling to accommodate the surge of passengers.
Amid the rush, many travellers reported difficulties even after securing tickets, as confirmed seating was unavailable, forcing them to travel in overcrowded general compartments. Train doors and windows are heavily congested with people trying to board, creating chaotic and potentially dangerous conditions.
In response to the situation, railway authorities have stepped up security and administrative measures at all major stations in Patna. Additional police personnel have been deployed to manage the crowds, while continuous announcements urge passengers to remain patient and book tickets well in advance.
The Crime Investigation Branch (CIB) has intensified checks on platforms, and the intelligence network has been activated to swiftly identify and address any untoward incidents. Security forces are closely monitoring for any anti-social activity, with preparations in place to prevent disruptions during this peak travel period.
Railway officials appealed to passengers to cooperate with authorities and maintain caution to ensure a safe and smooth journey for everyone during the Chhath Puja rush.
