Darbhanga: Popular folk and devotional singer Maithili Thakur has addressed growing speculation about her possible entry into politics ahead of the upcoming Bihar assembly elections. While she did not confirm or deny her political ambitions, she hinted at a personal connection to her home constituency.

Maithili Thakur recently met Bharatiya Janata Party election in-charge Vinod Tawde and Union minister Nityanand Rai. Photographs from the meeting went viral on social media, sparking rumours that she may contest the Bihar assembly election on a BJP ticket from a Darbhanga seat.

Vinod Tawde shared the photos on his X handle on Sunday. In his post, he said that Thakur, whose family had left Bihar in 1995 during Lalu Prasad Yadav's tenure, wishes to return after witnessing the state’s progress.

What did Maithili Thakur say about contesting?

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Thakur said: “I too have been seeing these things on TV. I recently visited Bihar and had the opportunity to meet Nityanand Rai, as well as Vinod Tawde. We had a discussion about Bihar's future. No official announcement has been made at this time. But let's see what happens. I would like to stand from my village constituency because I have an attachment to it.”

Her remarks have generated significant interest in political circles, especially amid speculation that several cultural figures may enter politics ahead of the elections.

When asked about her political leanings or whom she would support in the elections, the singer chose to remain reserved. She said: “I don't want to comment on this right now... I am standing strong to contribute whatever possible towards the country's development.”

Who is Maithili Thakur?

Maithili Thakur, a native of Benipatti in Madhubani district, Bihar, was named the ‘State Icon’ of Bihar by the Election Commission.

A trained vocalist in Indian classical and folk music, she received the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar from the Sangeet Natak Akademi in 2021 for her efforts in promoting Bihar’s folk traditions.

In January 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded Thakur for performing a song about Maa Shabri, who, according to the Ramayan, offered half-eaten fruit to Shri Ram during his exile.

She was among 24 influencers honoured at the inaugural National Creators Awards organised by the government in 2024, recognising individuals who promote the vision of a confident and assertive New India. She received the title of 'Cultural Ambassador of the Year'.

When will the Bihar Assembly elections be held?

The election for the 243 assembly seats in Bihar will be conducted in two phases on November 6 and November 11. The counting of votes will take place on November 14, following the announcement of dates by the Election Commission on Monday.
