Chennai: The Madras High Court dismissed a petition filed by Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which sought a CBI probe into the Karur stampede tragedy during a Vijay rally.

The incident, which occurred earlier this year, resulted in 41 deaths and dozens of injuries.

The court ruled that there was no sufficient ground to transfer the investigation to the CBI, and the matter should continue under the jurisdiction of local authorities.

TVK had argued that a central investigation was necessary to ensure impartiality and thoroughness, citing alleged lapses in crowd management during the rally. However, the court noted that state police investigations had been progressing and found no immediate reason for central intervention.

The Karur stampede, one of the deadliest in Tamil Nadu in recent years, took place on 27 September during a political event where thousands of attendees had gathered. Authorities had previously stated that they were examining factors such as venue capacity, crowd control, and emergency response.

The court’s dismissal underscores the judicial stance on CBI intervention, reserving central probes for cases where local investigations are demonstrably inadequate.
