Investigation launched, with political leaders visiting victims and CM forming a probe commission

Chennai: Karur City Police are set to produce Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’s (TVK) Karur West District Secretary, Mathiyazhagan, and town functionary Paun Raj in court today, following their medical examination.
On Saturday, September 27, a rally organised by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor-politician Vijay in Karur witnessed a massive turnout. As the crowd swelled, chaos broke out, triggering a deadly stampede. Forty-one people lost their lives, including 18 women and 10 children, while many others were injured and rushed to nearby hospitals.

The two were arrested for their role in arranging flagpoles and flex banners for TVK chief Vijay’s September 27 campaign in Karur, where a stampede left 41 people dead, including 18 women and 10 children. According to police, Paun Raj also provided shelter to Mathiyazhagan after the incident.
Chennai Police have also arrested YouTuber and journalist Felix Gerald in connection with the case. The incident unfolded when the massive turnout for Vijay’s rally turned chaotic, leading to panic and people fainting in the crowd.
In the aftermath, senior leaders from both state and national levels have intervened. Union Ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and L Murugan, along with Tamil Nadu BJP chief Nainar Nagenthran, visited victims’ families. BJP president JP Nadda also announced an eight-member delegation, led by BJP MP Hema Malini, to assess the circumstances leading to the tragedy.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has set up a one-member commission headed by retired High Court judge Aruna Jagadeesan to probe the incident. Both Stalin and Sitharaman have emphasised the urgent need for standard operating procedures to regulate large public gatherings to prevent such disasters in future.
