Kolkata: A pall of grief has descended over Kolkata’s Topsia area after a secondary (Madhyamik) examination student allegedly died by suicide, with her family linking the tragedy to distress over her Mathematics paper.
According to police sources, the minor’s body was recovered from her residence on Mahendra Roy Lane on Thursday night. She was immediately rushed to the National Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

Family members said the student had been deeply upset since appearing for her Mathematics examination earlier that day. While she had reportedly performed well in her other papers, relatives claimed she grew increasingly withdrawn and anxious over her expectations for the math exam.
“The rest of her exams went well, but she kept worrying about Mathematics,” a family member said, describing her as a bright student burdened by disappointment and fear.
The incident came to light when the family grew alarmed after she failed to respond for a prolonged period on Thursday evening. Upon entering the room, relatives discovered her unresponsive and alerted authorities.
Police officials from the Topsia police station reached the spot soon after receiving information. No suicide note was found, officers confirmed.
A case of unnatural death has been registered, and an investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances leading to the tragic incident. The body has been sent for autopsy.
The heartbreaking episode has once again brought into focus the immense psychological pressure faced by students during board examinations.
Mental health experts have repeatedly warned that academic stress, coupled with fear of failure, can have devastating consequences if emotional struggles go unnoticed. The Madhyamik examinations concluded on February 12.
