A 31-year-old M.Sc. Physics student allegedly jumped from the sixth floor of IIT Delhi’s Lecture Hall Complex on Saturday morning.

A 31-year-old M.Sc. Physics student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi allegedly died by suicide after jumping from the sixth floor of the institute’s Lecture Hall Complex on Saturday morning, police said.
According to police, a call was received by the police control room at around 8:33 am about a student who had fallen from the building on the IIT Delhi campus.
The information was subsequently transferred to Kishangarh police station, which has jurisdiction over the area.
A police team reached the spot and rushed the injured student to the IIT Delhi campus hospital.
However, doctors declared him brought dead. Police later identified him as a 31-year-old student pursuing an M.Sc. in Physics at IIT Delhi.
Investigators, along with crime scene and forensic science teams, examined the spot and collected evidence as part of the ongoing probe.
What happened at IIT Delhi
Police said their preliminary enquiry indicated that the student entered the IIT Delhi campus through the main gate at around 8 am.
He then proceeded to the Lecture Hall Complex, took a lift to the sixth floor and allegedly jumped from the front side of the building.
An IIT Delhi official confirmed that a tragic incident had taken place on the campus and said the Delhi Police were investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.
Police said no apparent injury marks other than those consistent with the fall were found during the initial examination. No suicide note has been recovered so far.
A mobile phone was also found in the student's pocket and has been taken for examination as part of the investigation. Police are also obtaining counselling records and other relevant information from the institute to establish the circumstances that may have preceded the incident.
Officials said the facts are being verified and further legal action will be taken according to law.
Second alleged suicide at IIT Delhi since March
The incident is the second alleged suicide at the IIT Delhi campus since March.
In March, a 19-year-old first-year BTech student was found dead at an apartment inside the institute campus.
Police subsequently registered a case of abetment of suicide and began investigating the circumstances surrounding the student's death.
The latest incident has once again brought attention to student welfare and counselling support at one of the country's premier educational institutions.
Police are continuing their investigation into the 31-year-old student's death.
