Former Puducherry lieutenant governor Kiran Bedi has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene urgently as Delhi continues to record ‘very poor’ air quality

New Delhi: Former top police officer and former Puducherry lieutenant governor Kiran Bedi on Friday appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to step in as air pollution levels in Delhi worsened. Her message came as several areas in the national capital recorded an overall Air Quality Index (AQI) of 369, falling in the ‘very poor’ category.
In a post on X, Bedi referenced Modi’s “effective” virtual meetings with officials during her tenure in Puducherry and urged him to adopt a similar approach to address Delhi’s air crisis. She requested the prime minister to conduct monthly virtual meetings with chief ministers and chief secretaries of neighbouring states to review progress on pollution control. Such oversight, she said, would reassure people that the issue was being monitored at the highest level.

Bedi also urged Modi to highlight pollution concerns in his next Mann Ki Baat broadcast to reach all age groups and encourage public participation in pollution reduction efforts. She added that Delhi had been “waiting for a double engine” approach to undo years of pollution-related damage, calling for strengthened coordination between states and agencies.
In recent weeks, Bedi has been active on X, sharing posts and commentary on Delhi’s air quality. She stressed that pollution was not accidental but the result of long-term gaps in cooperative governance, and called for better coordination between states to tackle the problem.
Delhi’s air quality remained in the ‘very poor’ range on Saturday morning, with an AQI of 332 according to the Central Pollution Control Board’s 9 am bulletin. This was slightly lower than Friday’s reading of 369. The Air Quality Early Warning System forecasts that pollution levels are likely to stay in the ‘very poor’ category over the coming week.
The India Meteorological Department reported a minimum temperature of 10.4°C, with a mainly clear sky and a maximum of around 25°C expected. Relative humidity was recorded at 90 per cent at 8.30 am.
