Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday praised Kerala-based swimming instructor Saji Valasseril during the latest episode of Mann Ki Baat, highlighting his efforts to teach swimming and promote water safety among thousands of people, including specially-abled children.

Mentioning Valasseril's work as an example of grassroots social service, PM Modi said the Aluva-based coach has helped more than 15,000 people learn swimming through a unique river-based training programme in Kerala's Ernakulam district.

During the 134th episode of his monthly radio address, Modi described the initiative as a school without classrooms, buildings or traditional fees, where lessons are conducted in a river.

"In the Aluva region of Ernakulam district in Kerala, Saji Valasseril runs one such swimming club. More than 15,000 people have learned to swim here. Saji ji has also taught swimming to Divyang children," the Prime Minister said.

Who is Saji Valasseril?

Saji Valasseril is a swimming instructor from Aluva in Kerala who has spent more than 15 years teaching swimming and water-survival skills to people of all age groups. His initiative operates at Desam near Aluva Manappuram in Ernakulam district and focuses on preventing drowning accidents through practical training.

According to PM Modi, Valasseril's mission began after a tragic boat accident years ago in which several students lost their lives. Deeply affected by the incident, he decided to dedicate himself to teaching swimming so that more people could acquire a life-saving skill.

His training programme follows a structured syllabus that includes floating techniques, kicking, underwater swimming, breathing control and safe swimming practices.

The swimming camps are usually conducted between November and May each year. To maintain safety, rescue boats and ambulances remain on standby during training sessions, while participants contribute a nominal one-time fee towards safety arrangements.

Praising his contribution, the Prime Minister said Valasseril's work demonstrates that meaningful social change can be achieved through consistent effort and a commitment to helping others.
