Around 200–250 Airbus A320 family aircraft operated by Indian airlines may require software updates to mitigate potential flight control issues caused by intense solar radiation

Airbus has issued a precautionary alert after identifying that intense solar radiation could potentially corrupt data critical to the functioning of flight controls in a significant number of A320 family aircraft. This follows the analysis of a recent incident involving one of the aircraft, prompting immediate action to ensure the fleet remains safe.
The issue affects both software and hardware components in some aircraft, and operators are required to implement protective updates through an Alert Operators Transmission (AOT). The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) will formalise this in an Emergency Airworthiness Directive, mandating compliance to maintain operational safety.

In India, around 200–250 A320 family aircraft operated by various carriers are expected to require these software changes. Airbus has acknowledged that implementing the updates may lead to operational disruptions, including delays and temporary grounding of certain flights, but emphasises that passenger safety is the top priority.
The alert highlights the aviation industry's sensitivity to environmental factors such as solar radiation, which can interfere with electronic systems on modern aircraft. Airbus is working closely with airlines and aviation authorities to minimise disruption while ensuring all affected aircraft meet strict safety standards.
The AOT provides detailed instructions for software and hardware protection measures to safeguard flight-critical systems. Once the directive is formalised by EASA, compliance will be mandatory for all operators with affected aircraft.
This precautionary action underlines the proactive approach of aircraft manufacturers and regulators in mitigating risks from environmental factors, demonstrating the importance of continuous monitoring and rapid response in maintaining aviation safety.
