West Bengal Durga Puja depicts Trump as demon, CNN report highlights India-US tensions.

During West Bengal’s Durga Puja festival, a sculpture of the goddess Durga was unveiled showing her slaying a demon with the face and body of US President Donald Trump. Traditionally, Durga defeats Mahishasura, representing the triumph of good over evil. This year, the demon has been replaced by Trump. According to a CNN report, it symbolises perceived threats to India under his administration.
What report says
The depiction comes amid rising friction between India and the US. The Trump administration imposed tariffs on Indian goods, criticised the Indian economy, and introduced a $100,000 fee for H-1B visa applications. India called the moves “unfair” and “unjustified,” arguing that similar trade continued with other countries. These developments have framed Trump as a modern-day demon in the eyes of the artists.
The installation in Murshidabad was created over three months in secrecy. The final facial features of Trump were only added in the last week, ensuring a dramatic reveal. Following its unveiling, thousands flocked to see the striking installation.
Durga Puja in West Bengal has evolved into a platform for public dialogue. Past installations have depicted figures such as Osama Bin Laden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping. This year’s sculpture continues the tradition of blending religious symbolism with commentary on contemporary political events.
