A Durga Puja committee in West Bengal has sparked laughter and debate by unveiling an ‘asura’ idol modelled after Donald Trump, citing his tariffs and visa policies as the inspiration.

Kolkata: In a quirky twist to festive creativity, a Durga Puja committee in West Bengal has unveiled an ‘asura’ idol modelled after former US President Donald Trump, sparking a storm of reactions on social media.
A viral video shared on Facebook shows sculptor Asim Pal carefully working on the idol, shaping the demon’s face to resemble Trump — complete with pale skin and a familiar hairdo. Watch the video below:
The idol has been installed at Khagra Crematorium Ghat Durga Puja Committee, where organisers explained their unusual choice.
“Trump has betrayed India with his 50 per cent tariff and visa restrictions. Our Prime Minister considered him a friend, but Trump has let him down. That is why he has been portrayed as an asura,” a spokesperson told Anandabazar.com.
Reactions online ranged from laughter to outrage. Some users found it hilarious, with one quipping, “Why is the statue better looking than the original piece?”
Others were upset, arguing that politics should not mix with Durga Puja. “This is not right. Pujo is not a joke,” wrote one commenter.
The controversy comes against the backdrop of recent trade talks between India and the US, where officials discussed ways to move past the ongoing tariff disputes.
