New Delhi: The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has been completed in six states and Union Territories across India. According to the Election Commission (EC), the revision process led to the removal of a large number of ineligible electors.

Gujarat recorded the highest number of deletions, with 6.8 million electors removed, bringing the electorate down from 50.8 million to 44 million (a decrease of 13.4%). Madhya Pradesh followed with 3.4 million deletions, reducing its electorate from 57.4 million to 53.9 million (down 5.97%).

Other states also saw substantial revisions. Rajasthan’s electorate dropped by 3.1 million, from 54.7 million to 51.5 million. Chhattisgarh saw a reduction of nearly 2.5 million electors, from 21.2 million to 18.7 million. Kerala’s roll decreased by around 900,000, from 27.8 million to 26.9 million, while Goa’s voter list fell by 127,000, from 1.18 million to 1.06 million. Among Union Territories, Andaman and Nicobar Islands recorded a decrease of 52,000, from 310,000 to 258,000, while Puducherry’s electorate dropped by 77,000, from 1.02 million to 944,000. Lakshadweep saw a minor reduction, from 57,813 to 57,607.

The EC clarified that the net decrease in electors accounts for those removed due to death, permanent relocation, multiple registrations, and other eligibility issues, offset by the addition of newly eligible voters. The electoral roll update is a continuous process, with eligible citizens still able to apply for additions, deletions, or corrections.

SIR data for West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu will be released later this month. The EC has launched the nationwide SIR process in 12 states and is working with Chief Electoral Officers in the remaining states to prepare for the next phase. The EC has also scheduled the next phase of the revision process to begin in April as part of its ongoing electoral roll verification efforts.
