The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in several parts of the country over the coming days, with Kerala, Karnataka, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Odisha among the areas expected to receive significant rain.
In the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Sunday, August 9, very heavy rainfall of 12-20 cm was recorded in Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Coastal and South Interior Karnataka. Heavy rainfall of 7-11 cm was recorded in East Rajasthan, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Bihar, Madhya Maharashtra, Assam and Kerala.

The IMD said the western end of the monsoon trough is close to its normal position, while its eastern end is south of its normal position.
A low-pressure area that was over south Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining north Odisha on Saturday has moved to northeast Madhya Pradesh and adjoining Chhattisgarh.
The weather department has also identified several other systems that are influencing weather conditions across the country. These include a Western Disturbance, an upper-air cyclonic circulation over Central Assam and another over South Madhya Maharashtra.
A fresh cyclonic circulation is also likely to form over the north Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts around August 11. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the same region around August 13.
Heavy rain likely in Kerala and south India
Kerala, Coastal Karnataka and Lakshadweep are likely to receive fairly widespread to widespread rainfall from August 9 to 15.
Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Coastal Karnataka, Kerala and Mahe, and South Interior Karnataka on August 9.
The IMD has also forecast thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds in Kerala and Mahe, Lakshadweep, and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on August 9 and 10. Winds may reach speeds of 40-50 kmph, with gusts up to 60 kmph.
Strong surface winds are also likely over Kerala and Mahe, Lakshadweep and North Interior Karnataka on August 9 and 10.
In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, isolated to scattered rainfall is likely during August 9-15. Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam are expected to see fairly widespread to widespread rainfall on August 9 and from August 10-15.
North and central India also likely to see heavy rain
Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is expected over Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad and Uttarakhand between August 9 and 15.
Uttarakhand is also likely to see isolated thunderstorms and lightning during this period. Heavy rainfall is expected in the state from August 11-15, with very heavy rainfall possible on August 9 and 10.
In central India, East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and West Madhya Pradesh are likely to receive fairly widespread to widespread rainfall from August 9-11. Chhattisgarh is expected to see similar conditions from August 9-10 and August 13-15.
Very heavy rainfall is likely over West Madhya Pradesh on August 9 and 10, while Chhattisgarh, East Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha could also experience very heavy rain on August 9.
Rain forecast for eastern and northeastern states
Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is likely over Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim from August 9-15.
Odisha is expected to receive fairly widespread to widespread rainfall from August 9-10 and again from August 13-15. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Odisha from August 9-15.
In the Northeast, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya and the other northeastern states are expected to see varying periods of rainfall through August 15.
Thunderstorms and lightning are also likely across several northeastern states between August 9 and 13.
Fishermen warned of rough weather
The IMD has issued warnings for fishermen in parts of both the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal.
In the Arabian Sea, warnings are in place for areas along and off the Somalia and Oman coasts, parts of the southwest and west-central Arabian Sea, and waters along and off the Karnataka and Kerala coasts and around Lakshadweep.
In the Bay of Bengal, warnings cover the Andaman Sea, parts of the southwest Bay of Bengal near the south Sri Lanka coast and Comorin area, and the north Bay of Bengal.
The IMD has advised fishermen to take note of the warnings for the respective periods.
