The price of power: Vijay’s TVK faces a ₹1 lakh crore fiscal challenge to fulfill its ambitious welfare promises in Tamil Nadu.

New Delhi: Even as an uncertainty looms over the formation of the TVK government, it is interesting to know if at all his government becomes a reality, this much money—a staggering ₹1 lakh crore—will be required to fuel Vijay's populist engine.
While the "cinematic style" entry of the Tamil superstar into politics has captured the public’s imagination, the cold, hard mathematics of the state treasury tells a different story. For a state already staring at a ₹10.71 lakh crore debt mountain, the challenge isn't just about winning votes; it's about finding the gold to pay for the "gold and silk" promises.
Actor Vijay, who is preparing to take the reins of power in Tamil Nadu, will need to spend approximately ₹1 lakh crore per year to fulfill his election promises.
Vijay, who has promised direct cash transfers to women, the unemployed and youth, will have to spend nearly one-third of the state's total revenue to realise his vision.
According to the 2025-26 State Budget, Tamil Nadu's total revenue income stands at ₹3.31 lakh crore.
While the current DMK government spent ₹65,000 crore on welfare schemes and subsidies last financial year, Vijay’s party (TVK) would need to increase this by over 50%—earmarking close to ₹1 lakh crore—to deliver on every manifesto pledge.
Key promises in the TVK manifesto that helped propel them toward becoming the single largest party include
- ₹2,500 monthly assistance for homemakers under the age of 60
- Six free LPG cylinders per household annually
- 200 units of free electricity per month for every home.
- Gold and silk sarees for the weddings of young women from families with an annual income below ₹5 lakh.
- ₹4,000 monthly financial aid for unemployed graduates.
In addition to these, TVK has announced various subsidies across education, agriculture, fisheries, pensions and social welfare.
However, these promises come at a time when Tamil Nadu is already grappling with huge debt. Estimates suggest the state's total debt burden will hit ₹10.71 lakh crore by March next year. With the state’s annual tax revenue alone standing at ₹2.1 lakh crore, Vijay would essentially be spending nearly half of that total just on welfare activities.
If Vijay manages to balance the scales between his ambitious welfare vision and the state’s shrinking wallet, it would be a script more dramatic than any of his blockbusters. But for now, the question remains: Can a government run on a budget where one out of every three rupees earned goes straight into fulfilling election vows? Tamil Nadu waits to see if the superstar can turn financial fiction into reality.
