The month-long spiritual journey of Ramadan is set to complete its full 30-day cycle in India. Following the official meeting of the Deccan Muslim Ulema Council Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, it has been confirmed that the Shawwal crescent moon was not sighted on Thursday evening. Consequently, Eid-ul-Fitr 2026 in India will be celebrated on Saturday, March 21.
Despite clear skies in several regions, the Shawwal crescent remained invisible to the naked eye and telescopic equipment on Thursday, March 19. As per Islamic tradition, if the moon is not sighted on the 29th day of Ramadan, the month automatically completes 30 days. This means Friday, March 20, will be the final day of fasting for Muslims in India, with the grand festival commencing the following morning.
What is the Eid-ul-Fitr 2026 status for Bangladesh and Pakistan?
The situation is mirrored across the subcontinent. Bangladesh has also officially announced that the moon of Shawwal 1447 Hijri was not sighted. The country’s Religious Affairs Minister confirmed via the BSS news agency that Saturday, March 21, will be the day of celebration for Bangladesh as well. Similarly, local committees in Pakistan have reported a 30-day Ramadan, aligning the entire South Asian region for a synchronised Saturday Eid.
While Saudi Arabia and the GCC nations are celebrating Friday, March 20 as Eid, the Indian subcontinent typically follows a local visibility rule. Because the Islamic lunar calendar depends on geographical coordinates and the moon's altitude at sunset, the crescent often becomes visible in the Middle East nearly 24 hours before it can be spotted in India. This geographical lag is the reason for the one-day difference in celebrations this year.
How are Indian cities preparing for a Saturday Eid?
The "No Moon" announcement has paradoxically sparked an even bigger surge in Chand Raat festivities. With an extra day of preparation, markets in cities like Mumbai's Mohammad Ali Road and Delhi’s Jama Masjid are witnessing massive crowds.
Last-minute rushes for Chikankari kurtas and designer footwear have intensified. Mehendi artists are working overnight, and sweet shops are reporting record bookings for Sheer Khurma ingredients and Vermicelli (Sewiyan).
