Delhi-NCR rain havoc: Roads flooded, traffic crawls as heavy showers lash region

Delhi: Heavy rainfall lashed Delhi and neighbouring NCR areas on Friday, causing widespread waterlogging, traffic disruptions and inconvenience for commuters. Several key roads across the national capital were flooded as intense showers affected movement during peak hours.

The Mehrauli-Badarpur (MB) Road in South Delhi was among the worst-hit stretches, with water accumulating up to three to four feet in some areas. Traffic movement was severely affected near Vayusena Bad, while locations including Okhla Mor, Sangam Vihar, Khanpur, Deoli and Ambedkar Nagar also reported heavy waterlogging.

Commuters faced long delays as vehicles struggled through flooded roads, with several two-wheelers and auto-rickshaws reportedly breaking down. Traffic congestion was also reported on major routes including ITO, Wazirabad Road, Patel Road, Rohtak Road, Shankar Road, Kirti Nagar, Peeragarhi and Shaheen Bagh.

Noida and Gurugram also affected

The impact of the rainfall extended to neighbouring NCR cities. In Noida, an ambulance was stranded for over 30 minutes at a waterlogged underpass near Mahamaya Flyover.

In Gurugram, heavy rain disrupted services at the Civil Hospital after water entered the basement and parts of the ground floor. Some medical services were affected as authorities worked to remove accumulated water.

Heavy rainfall across Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad on Friday led to widespread waterlogging and severe traffic congestion in several parts of the National Capital Region. Major roads witnessed slow movement, with commuters reporting long delays due to flooded stretches and stalled vehicles.

Traffic in Delhi

A traffic jam stretching several kilometres was reported on the Dhaula Kuan-Gurugram road, where commuters remained stuck for nearly an hour. Several motorists also complained about vehicles moving in the wrong direction, adding to the chaos.

In parts of Delhi, residents faced severe waterlogging after hours of rain. In Valmiki Basti, people were seen wading through waist-deep water, while some residents used a large blue plastic sheet to carry schoolchildren through flooded lanes.

Residents said the area has faced flooding problems for years and blamed drainage issues and water flow blockages for repeated water accumulation during monsoon rains.

Traffic slows across key Delhi routes

Heavy congestion was reported on several important roads, including Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, ITO, Wazirabad Road, Patel Road, Rohtak Road, Shankar Road, Kirti Nagar, Peeragarhi and Shaheen Bagh.

Waterlogging was also reported in areas such as Mahipalpur T-Point, Chhatarpur, Shakarpur, Dakshinpuri, Okhla, Sangam Vihar, Sainik Farms and areas near the Red Fort.

IMD predicts gradual decline in rainfall

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said moderate to heavy rainfall would continue through Friday, with showers expected to reduce from Saturday. Light rainfall is likely to continue over Delhi for the next two days.

The weather department has advised residents to remain cautious, especially in low-lying areas, as further showers could worsen waterlogging conditions.

Rain continues across NCR

Fresh rain activity affected Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad through Friday evening. Several parts of NCR recorded heavy rainfall, adding pressure on drainage systems and civic authorities.

Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and follow traffic and weather updates as agencies continue relief and water-clearing operations.
