More than 10 schools and colleges in Dakshina Kannada have been served notices after allegedly conducting classes despite repeated rain holiday orders. Many of the complaints that triggered the action came directly from students.

More than 10 schools and colleges in Dakshina Kannada have been issued notices for allegedly violating rain holiday orders by conducting classes despite repeated directives from the district administration.
With the southwest monsoon intensifying across Karnataka's coastal belt, the Dakshina Kannada administration had declared holidays for educational institutions on multiple occasions as a safety measure.
However, officials received complaints that several private institutions ignored the orders and continued to hold classes.
According to sources, a significant number of these complaints were filed by students themselves through phone calls and other channels, prompting the administration to initiate action.
Last week, the district administration announced a three-day closure for schools and colleges in view of the heavy rainfall.
After reports of institutions remaining open during the first holiday, officials issued warnings and instructed them to comply. Similar warnings followed after a second round of violations.
Despite repeated directions, some institutions allegedly conducted classes again during the third holiday period.
Following the repeated violations, notices have now been served on more than 10 schools and colleges in Mangaluru, asking them to submit explanations.
The administration is expected to decide on further action after reviewing their responses.
Officials have also warned private educational institutions that any future violations of holiday orders issued during emergencies could invite stricter action, including a recommendation to the government to cancel their licences.
They emphasised that directives issued under the Disaster Management Act must be followed without exception.
Meanwhile, the district administration is considering announcing rain holidays earlier than usual. In previous years, such decisions were often taken only on the morning of the closure, causing inconvenience to students and parents who had already prepared for the school day.
