The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, issued a five-day rainfall forecast for Kerala, warning of heavy to very heavy rain in several districts.

The weather department said a deep depression is currently lying over central Chhattisgarh and adjoining northern Odisha. The system is likely to move westwards through Chhattisgarh and eastern Madhya Pradesh during the next 24 hours.

Under its influence, Kerala is likely to receive light to moderate rainfall from Wednesday, July 29, to Sunday, August 2. Isolated areas are expected to receive very heavy rainfall from July 29 to August 1, while strong rainfall is likely at isolated places from July 29 to August 2, the IMD said.

Orange alert issued in Kerala districts from July 29 to August 1

The IMD has issued an orange alert for the following districts:

Wednesday, July 29: Idukki, Wayanad and Kannur

Thursday, July 30: Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur

Friday, July 31: Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Kannur and Kasaragod

Saturday, August 1: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam

An orange alert indicates the possibility of very heavy rainfall in isolated areas. The IMD defines very heavy rainfall as rainfall between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm within 24 hours.

Thunderstorms are also likely in the affected districts, according to the weather department.

Yellow alert issued across districts till August 2

The IMD has also issued yellow alerts for several districts during the five-day period.

A yellow alert indicates the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall. The IMD defines heavy rainfall as rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours.

Strong winds likely in Kerala till August 1

The IMD has warned of strong winds in Kerala during the forecast period.

On Wednesday, July 29, winds may reach speeds of 30 to 40 kmph. From Thursday, July 30, to Saturday, August 1, strong winds with speeds of 40 to 50 kmph are likely in the state.

Residents and travellers have been advised to remain cautious and follow weather updates issued by the IMD.
