Climate activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk joined the demonstration, arriving at the protest site carrying a rose. His presence added visibility to the gathering, which has largely been driven by student and Gen-Z participation.
The protest is led by CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, who has described the initiative as a youth-driven movement focused on accountability in India’s education system. CJP has outlined organisational guidelines for participants, urging peaceful conduct, discipline, and the carrying of national flags and books during the demonstration.
Who is Sonam Wangchuk?
Sonam Wangchuk is an Indian engineer, education reformer, and climate activist from Ladakh, known for his work in improving education systems, promoting sustainable technologies, and advocating for environmental and constitutional issues in the Himalayan region.
He studied mechanical engineering at NIT Srinagar and later became widely recognised for questioning rote-based learning methods after his own experiences with the education system. This led him to focus on reforming how students are taught, especially in remote and high-altitude regions like Ladakh.
In 1988, he co-founded SECMOL (Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh), an organisation aimed at transforming government schooling in the region. Through SECMOL and related initiatives, he promoted practical, activity-based learning and helped improve educational outcomes for students who were struggling under conventional systems.
Wangchuk is also known for environmental and engineering innovations designed for cold desert conditions. His work includes the development of “ice stupas”, artificial glaciers that store winter water for use during dry months, as well as solar-powered, energy-efficient school infrastructure. These projects have been widely cited as practical solutions for water scarcity and climate challenges in the Himalayas.
Over the years, he has received several international recognitions, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2018, as well as other global honours for innovation and social entrepreneurship.
In recent years, Wangchuk has also become a prominent activist on political and environmental issues in Ladakh, including demands for statehood, Sixth Schedule protections, and stronger safeguards for the region’s ecology. He has led and supported protests and hunger strikes on these issues, bringing national attention to Ladakh’s concerns.
As of 2026, he continues to be active in public life and advocacy. Reports show his involvement in youth-led movements such as the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest in Delhi, where he has been associated with calls for education reform and examination system accountability, further extending his role as a public voice on education and governance issues.
Public messaging at the protest
Addressing supporters at the site, organisers reiterated concerns about unemployment, inflation, and the examination system. Speeches highlighted the frustrations of students affected by repeated disruptions and controversies in national-level exams.
The movement has also taken steps to formalise its structure, including the appointment of spokespersons to handle media communication and coordinate messaging around the protest.
Delhi Police are assessing the situation ahead of and during the protest. Authorities are expected to monitor crowd size, permissions, and public safety arrangements as the demonstration continues.
