New Delhi: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Saturday ordered the immediate release of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk. The government exercised its powers under the National Security Act (NSA) to revoke his detention, nearly six months after he was first taken into custody.

he MHA stated that the decision was taken to foster an "environment of peace, stability, and mutual trust" in Ladakh. The government expressed its intent to move toward a meaningful dialogue with all regional stakeholders to address local aspirations and concerns.

Wangchuk had been detained on September 26, 2025, following a major law and order incident in Leh on September 24. The District Magistrate of Leh had issued the detention order citing the need to maintain public order. By the time of this revocation, the activist had completed nearly half of his prescribed detention period.

While revoking the detention, the MHA highlighted that the prolonged atmosphere of bandhs (strikes) and protests has been detrimental to Ladakh’s unique, peace-loving character. The ministry noted that the unrest had adversely impacted:
