The Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed the West Bengal state government to suspend and file FIRs against four officials — two Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and two Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) — for negligence in election-related duties and for deliberately sharing sensitive information with unauthorised individuals, according to media reports.
The action follows a report submitted by the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal, which identified the ERO and AERO from Baruipur Purba assembly constituency and the ERO and AERO from Moyna assembly constituency as being responsible for the lapses.
In addition to suspending the four officials, the Commission also ordered disciplinary proceedings against a casual data entry operator involved in the matter.
The Election Commission has also instructed the state authorities to submit a report detailing the actions taken at the earliest.
