London: Essex batter Robin Das, a Bangladeshi-origin, has been charged with two counts of rape in relation to an alleged incident that occurred in March 2024. The 24-year-old right-handed batsman, who has featured in nine first-class and 29 List A matches for the county, has been directed to present himself at the Inner London Crown Court on October 9.

According to statement details released by the Metropolitan Police, Das was charged on July 23, 2026. Authorities noted that the charges originate from a report of a woman being raped in Brixton on March 30, 2024, which led to his initial arrest on August 27, 2025. The police confirmed that the complainant continues to receive ongoing assistance from specialist officers.

Das last featured for Essex in a One-Day Cup fixture on July 21, 2026, where he scored 29 runs, shortly before the charges were formally brought against him. He has not played for the team since.

Acknowledging the legal proceedings without directly naming the player in their official statement, Essex County Cricket Club confirmed that a contracted male playing staff member had recently appeared in court over an off-field incident.

The county club stated that it has maintained continuous communication with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), the Professional Cricketers' Association (PCA), the Cricket Regulator, and the player. They confirmed that an immediate suspension remains in effect and emphasised their commitment to adhering strictly to all appropriate legal frameworks and guidance.

The club added that stringent HR and safeguarding protocols are enforced across the organisation to ensure high standards of conduct, concluding that no further comments would be issued while the matter remains before the court.

Similar legal allegations have surfaced involving other professional cricketers in recent years. Former Worcestershire player Alex Hepburn was previously handed a five-year prison sentence, while Nepal international Sandeep Lamichhane was convicted in 2023 before subsequently being acquitted on appeal. Other players who have faced charges include former Sri Lanka international Danushka Gunathilaka, former Bangladesh bowler Rubel Hossain, and Delhi Capitals' Abishek Porel, whose case remains active.
