Indore: An alleged molestation incident involving two members of the Australian women’s cricket team occurred in Indore on 23 October 2025, prompting swift intervention by law enforcement. The players were reportedly on their way from their hotel to a café when they faced inappropriate behaviour from a local man.

According to Additional DCP (Crime Branch) Rajesh Dandotiya, the team’s security officers immediately filed a complaint following the incident. “An FIR was registered, and the accused was identified and arrested following an intensive strategic operation. The accused, Aqueel, is a resident of Azadnagar,” Dandotiya said. He added that the man has been charged under sections 74 and 78 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The incident occurred around 11 am, and the police are investigating whether there were any lapses in the security protocols for the visiting team. Authorities confirmed that the accused was apprehended within hours of the complaint.

Reacting to the development, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia described the case as “a very unfortunate incident.” He stated, “This type of incident brings disrepute. We appreciate the Madhya Pradesh Police for their prompt action to nab the culprit. Let the law take its course to punish the culprit.”

The matter has sparked concern within both cricketing and diplomatic circles, as the Australian team is currently on tour in India for a bilateral series. The investigation remains ongoing as police continue to assess the circumstances and review security measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

The accused, identified as Aqueel (resident of Azadnagar, Indore), allegedly approached the players near a busy street leading to the café. The incident was promptly reported to security personnel accompanying the team, leading to a police complaint.

Following the swift arrest, authorities assured both the Australian High Commission and the Cricket Australia delegation that the matter would be handled with utmost seriousness. Police officials confirmed that additional measures are being implemented to enhance the safety of the visiting athletes, including heightened surveillance and dedicated escort teams for their movement.

The Australian team management has not yet issued an official statement, but sources indicate close coordination with both BCCI and Madhya Pradesh authorities.

The case adds to a growing conversation around athlete safety and women’s security during international sporting tours, highlighting the need for stringent and proactive measures in host cities.
