Bengaluru: While most aspiring Indian batters try to mirror the aggressive cover drives of Virat Kohli or the effortless pulling of Rohit Sharma, 21-year-old top-order prospect Shaik Rasheed has deliberately built his technical foundation around English legend Joe Root. The Andhra right-hander idolises Root to the extent of wearing the number 66 on his jersey and spending hours analysing video edits of the former England captain's batting. Speaking to The Indian Express, Rasheed explained that Root's back-foot punch cover drive is his favourite shot, noting that watching Root play allows him to connect deeply with the mechanics of multi-day Test batting.

Mastering the Back-Foot Punch Under Pressure

Rather than relying purely on flair, Rasheed’s technical blueprint focuses on late, soft-handed defence, precise strike rotation, and punishing short deliveries off the back foot. His dedication to mastering this style was recently on display at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. After taking a painful blow to the ribs during a net session, Rasheed applied an ice pack, immediately returned to the crease, and instructed the throwdown specialist to bowl the exact same delivery for another 30 minutes until his back-foot punch cover drives were perfected.

Prolific Domestic Runs and Red-Ball Evolution

This disciplined approach yielded remarkable results during the recent domestic season. As detailed by The Indian Express, the 2022 Under-19 World Cup winner enjoyed a breakthrough Ranji Trophy campaign for Andhra, scoring 627 runs across eight matches at an astounding average of 89.57, featuring three centuries and two fifties. That form earned him a call-up to the India A squad for their tour of Sri Lanka, where he registered scores of 63, 20, and 45 against Sri Lanka A while working with coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar to master reading the seam and shine of the Kookaburra ball.

Visualisation Routines and Elite Mentorship

Rasheed’s progress is underpinned by meticulous mental preparation. The young batter utilises detailed video footage provided by team analysts to conduct extensive shadow practice routines before matches, mentally simulating deliveries from opposition bowlers like Mitchell Starc. Furthermore, during his three seasons with Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League, Rasheed absorbed crucial tactical guidance from former Australian batter Mike Hussey on how to construct long innings and dictate tempo when opportunities arise.

A Ready Anchor for India’s Test Future

Rasheed's childhood coach, NS Ganesh, has maintained for seven years that the young batter possesses the temperament to eventually step into the high-profile roles occupied by Kohli and Sharma. While Devdutt Padikkal currently holds India's No. 3 Test position, Rasheed's disciplined, Root-inspired style positions him as a rare, steady anchor candidate tailored for the rigours of international red-ball cricket.
