Early trends from the Election Commission of India show the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) taking a strong lead in Assam. Out of 126 assembly constituencies, the alliance was ahead in 98 seats as counting progressed.

The BJP alone was leading in 78 constituencies, while its partners, Atul Bora’s Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland Peoples’ Front (BPF), were ahead in 10 seats each.

The Congress, on the other hand, was leading in 25 seats, with its ally Raijor Dal ahead in one constituency. The AIUDF was leading in two seats, while the CPI(M) was ahead in one seat.

Himanta Biswa Sarma strong in Jalukbari

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was leading comfortably in the Jalukbari constituency, reinforcing expectations that he is poised for a second term if the trends hold.

The early results have added momentum to the BJP-led alliance’s campaign narrative, with the NDA maintaining a significant edge across multiple regions.

Key constituency battles to watch

Several high-profile contests were also closely tracked in the early trends:

In Jorhat, Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi was trailing behind BJP candidate Hitendranath Goswami.

In Khowang, AJP leader Lurinjyoti Gogoi lost his early lead and was trailing BJP’s Chakradhar Gogoi.

AGP president Atul Bora was ahead in Bokakhat, while party working president Keshab Mahanta led in Kaliabor.

Several BJP ministers also maintained leads in their respective constituencies, including:

  • Ranoj Pegu in Dhemaji
  • Pijush Hazarika in Jagiroad
  • Ashok Singhal in Dhekiajuli
  • Prashanta Phukan in Dibrugarh
  • Bimal Borah in Tingkhong

Former Congress leaders now in BJP lead in their seats

Former senior Congress leaders Pradyut Bordoloi and Bhupen Borah, who switched to the BJP ahead of the polls, were also leading in Dispur and Bihpuria respectively, adding another political talking point to the early trends.

Vote counting began at 8 am, starting with postal ballots. The process is being conducted across 40 counting centres in 35 districts.

Most districts have a single counting centre, but:

Nagaon has three centres

Kokrajhar, Tinsukia, and Jorhat have two centres each

High turnout in single-phase polling

Voting for all 126 assembly seats was held in a single phase on April 9. The state recorded a strong voter turnout of 85.96%, with nearly 2.5 crore voters participating.

As counting continues, early trends suggest a strong advantage for the NDA, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the BJP-led alliance firmly ahead in the race.
