BJP’s Prasanta Phukan, who has held the seat for years, remains a central figure in the contest

Counting of votes for the Dibrugarh Assembly constituency in Assam concluded on Monday, May 4, 2026, as part of the statewide counting exercise for all 126 constituencies of the Assam Legislative Assembly. The process, which began at 8 am with postal ballots followed by EVM counting, was conducted under tight security arrangements.
In the final result, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Prasanta Phukan secured a decisive victory in the constituency, defeating Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) candidate Mainak Patra by a margin of more than 72,043 votes. The result confirmed an early lead that remained consistent through the counting rounds.
Dibrugarh is an urban Assembly constituency located in Assam’s Dibrugarh district and forms part of the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha parliamentary segment. The constituency has an electorate of around 150,000 voters and a literacy rate of approximately 76 percent.

2021 election outcome
In the 2021 Assam Assembly elections, the Dibrugarh seat was secured by the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Prasanta Phukan emerged victorious with 68,762 votes, accounting for a vote share of 60.43 percent. The Indian National Congress candidate, Rajkumar Nilanetra Neog, finished as the runner-up with 30,757 votes and a 27.03 percent vote share. The margin of victory stood at 38,005 votes.
Prasanta Phukan has retained strong control over the constituency, having held the seat since 2006, except for a brief period in 2001. In the 2016 Assembly elections, he had won by a margin of 27,374 votes.
