Tamil Nadu faces intense heatwave with temperatures crossing 42°C in Vellore. IMD predicts rain but warns humidity and heat stress will persist.

Tamil Nadu continues to experience a sharp rise in temperatures even as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast spells of heavy rain in parts of the state over the next three days. While the showers may bring brief relief in some areas, the overall weather remains dominated by intense heat and humidity.
The Regional Meteorological Centre has indicated that several districts could see rainfall in the coming days. However, officials caution that the heatwave-like conditions are likely to persist, especially in coastal and interior regions.
Temperatures cross 40°C in several areas
On Friday, the state witnessed a significant spike in daytime temperatures, with at least 12 locations in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry recording above 37.8°C.
Vellore emerged as the hottest location, recording a maximum temperature of 42.2°C. Other major places such as Tiruchirappalli, Chennai (Meenambakkam), and Madurai Airport also reported highs close to 40°C.
Several other regions saw similar heat conditions:
Madurai city, Tirupattur and Dharmapuri: around 39.4°C
Erode, Karur, Paramathi, Tiruttani: near 38.9°C
Nagapattinam: 38.3°C
Palayamkottai and Puducherry: around 37.8°C
Meteorologists have warned that rising humidity levels combined with soaring temperatures could increase heat stress across the state. The discomfort is expected to be more severe during peak afternoon hours.
Coastal areas, including Chennai, are likely to feel even hotter due to moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal. In Chennai, the maximum temperature may hover around 40°C on Sunday, with sticky and sultry weather conditions adding to the discomfort.
IMD advisory: Stay safe during peak heat
The weather department has urged residents to take precautions against heat-related illnesses. People are advised to:
- Avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours
- Stay well hydrated
- Limit outdoor activities when possible
While upcoming rainfall may slightly lower temperatures in certain regions, experts say it is unlikely to significantly reduce the overall heat trend as summer conditions continue to strengthen across Tamil Nadu.
