A California jury has convicted beautician Vivian Alexandra Gomez in connection with the death of a model

Vivian Alexandra Gomez, a 53-year-old unlicensed cosmetologist, has been found guilty by a California jury for her role in the death of social media model Christina Ashten Gourkani. The case centres on a fatal cosmetic procedure carried out in April 2023 that led to serious health complications and ultimately Gourkani’s death.
Gourkani, who built an online following under the name “Ashten G” due to her resemblance to Kim Kardashian, had reportedly hired Gomez for gluteal silicone injections. The procedure was performed in a hotel room in the San Francisco Bay Area, outside any regulated medical setting.

According to prosecutors, Gomez was not licensed to perform medical procedures but still administered multiple injections of “free-floating” silicone, a practice that is not approved for body contouring due to severe health risks. During the procedure, Gourkani went into cardiac arrest and was rushed to hospital, where she died the following day.
Medical authorities determined the cause of death to be respiratory failure and a pulmonary embolism, believed to have been triggered by silicone entering her bloodstream. The case has since drawn attention to the dangers of unregulated cosmetic treatments.
Following a 15-day trial in San Mateo County, the jury convicted Gomez of two felony charges: involuntary manslaughter and practising medicine without a licence. After being out on bond during the trial, she was taken into custody immediately after the verdict.
Authorities had earlier arrested Gomez at an airport in Florida shortly after the incident. She was then extradited to California to face charges related to the case.
Gomez now faces a maximum sentence of seven years in prison, with sentencing scheduled for May 5, 2026. Until then, she remains in custody.
Gourkani’s family has remembered her as a caring and vibrant individual whose death has left a lasting impact. The case has also prompted renewed warnings from health officials against undergoing cosmetic procedures outside licensed medical environments, highlighting the potentially fatal consequences of illegal treatments.
