New Delhi: The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the Twisha Sharma death case on Monday after taking suo motu cognisance of the alleged dowry death and concerns regarding the handling of the investigation.

The matter has been registered under the title In Re: Alleged Institutional Bias and Procedural Discrepancies in the Unnatural Death of Young Woman at Matrimonial Home. The hearing will be conducted by a bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant along with Justice Joymalya Bagchi.

The apex court’s intervention has brought nationwide attention to the case, which has sparked public outrage and intense scrutiny over the role of authorities in the initial investigation.

Twisha Sharma was found dead at her matrimonial home

Twisha Sharma, a 32-year-old former actor and model, was found dead on May 12 at her matrimonial residence in Bhopal’s Katara Hills area.

Her family alleged that she had been facing harassment and abuse linked to dowry demands after her marriage to lawyer Samarth Singh. An FIR was subsequently registered against Samarth Singh and his mother, retired judge Giribala Singh.

The circumstances surrounding Twisha’s death triggered widespread debate after her family raised concerns about possible lapses in the investigation and handling of forensic procedures.

Husband surrendered after remaining absconding for 10 days

Samarth Singh surrendered before Bhopal police on May 22 after reportedly remaining absconding for nearly 10 days following the registration of the FIR.

Police confirmed that he is currently in custody and being questioned by investigators. Authorities are also planning a reconstruction of the crime scene as part of the ongoing probe.

SIT chief Rajneesh Kaul stated that Giribala Singh has been asked to remain available at home while police continue the investigation.

Second post-mortem conducted by AIIMS Delhi team

Twisha Sharma’s last rites were performed on Sunday evening after a second post-mortem examination was conducted by a team from AIIMS Delhi at AIIMS Bhopal.

The autopsy reportedly lasted nearly four hours and was ordered after Twisha’s parents approached the court alleging procedural discrepancies in the initial post-mortem conducted locally.

Twisha was cremated at Bhadbhada Vishram Ghat in Bhopal, with her brother Harshit Sharma performing the final rites. Samarth Singh was not granted permission to attend the cremation, while Giribala Singh was absent.

Dr Sudhir Gupta, head of forensic medicine at AIIMS Delhi, stated that the final report cannot be prepared immediately as several scientific examinations are still pending.

Officials said histopathology tests and viscera analysis will be required before doctors can arrive at a final medical conclusion regarding the cause and circumstances of death.

Samarth Singh claims relationship changed after pregnancy

According to investigating officers, Samarth Singh told police that tensions in the marriage intensified after Twisha’s pregnancy was confirmed on April 17. Police sources claimed he alleged that Twisha did not want a confined domestic life and wished to continue her glamour career. He also reportedly described disagreements involving travel plans to Delhi, Ajmer and Bengaluru.

According to Samarth’s statement, the couple had dinner together on May 12 before Twisha allegedly went downstairs to speak on the phone. He claimed his mother later found Twisha hanging on the rooftop using a nylon exercise belt.

Samarth reportedly told police that he tried to save her and performed CPR before taking her to AIIMS Bhopal, where doctors declared her dead.

Family rejects husband’s version of events

Twisha Sharma’s father, Navnidhi Sharma, has strongly disputed Samarth Singh’s account.

The family alleged that Twisha was speaking on the phone shortly before the incident and disconnected suddenly after Samarth was allegedly heard shouting in the background.

The family has continued to demand a fair and transparent investigation, insisting that several questions surrounding the case remain unanswered.

Today’s Supreme Court hearing is expected to focus not only on the alleged dowry death but also on accusations of institutional bias and procedural irregularities in the handling of the case.

The court’s observations could significantly influence the future direction of the investigation as public attention around the case continues to intensify.
