A retired ISRO employee has been arrested in Bengaluru after allegedly strangling his wife to death inside their South Bengaluru apartment, with police citing depression as a key factor.

Bengaluru: A 65-year-old retired employee of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) allegedly strangled his wife to death with a towel at their residence in South Bengaluru, police said on Wednesday. The accused, identified as Nageshwar Rao, was taken into custody after he remained inside the house following the incident.
The crime occurred at the Virtuoso apartment complex in Bommanahalli and was reported around 11 am under the Avalahalli police station limits. The victim, Sandya Sri, was found dead at the couple’s home.

According to officials, Rao had been undergoing treatment for depression and was reportedly distressed. Preliminary investigations indicate that he allegedly intended to end his own life after the attack.
“He was undergoing treatment for depression and was disturbed. He allegedly planned to take his own life after the incident. There do not appear to be any other major reasons at this stage,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Whitefield).
Police said Rao stayed at the residence after the alleged murder and later contacted an acquaintance, who alerted authorities. A police team subsequently reached the spot and detained him.
Investigators are also examining reports suggesting Rao was worried about his wife’s future after his death. However, police emphasised that the motive remains under investigation.
The couple’s daughter, who resides in the United States, has been informed, officials said. A case of murder has been registered, and further inquiries are underway.
