Haryana: Police in Haryana have arrested a chartered accountant for allegedly killing his pregnant wife and attempting to stage the crime as a robbery near Bahadurgarh in Jhajjar district.

A 27-year-old bank employee, identified as Mahak, was found dead with her throat slit near Pahsaur village in the Badli area of Jhajjar district on the night of February 15, 2026.

Her husband, Anshul Dhawan, a chartered accountant from Hisar, initially told police that unidentified attackers had intercepted their car and killed his wife during an attempted robbery.

The case was solved within 18 hours, with police arresting Dhawan as the prime accused after inconsistencies emerged in his statement.

Background of the couple

Mahak worked with HDFC Bank in Gurugram. She had married Anshul Dhawan, a resident of Hisar’s Sector 14, on September 25, 2025, in an arranged marriage. The couple had been married for about five months.

On February 14, they reportedly visited Hisar for Valentine’s Day and stayed with family. The following evening, around 7 pm on February 15, they left Mahak’s parental home in Hansi for Gurugram.

Around 11 pm, Dhawan contacted police, claiming that unknown assailants had attacked them near Bahadurgarh.

Investigation and confession

Police found Mahak’s body lying outside the car on a dirt track about 100 metres from the Jhajjar-Badli road.

During questioning, investigators said Dhawan failed to provide consistent details about the alleged attackers and repeatedly altered his version of events. A reconstruction of the crime scene and sustained interrogation led to his alleged confession.

According to police, the couple frequently argued over his suspicions about her character. During the drive, the dispute escalated. Investigators allege he strangled her and later slit her throat with scissors while wearing gloves to avoid leaving evidence. The scene was then staged to resemble a robbery.

Family members stated that Mahak was pregnant at the time of her death. Her father, Krishna Kathuria, had reportedly expressed suspicion against his son-in-law from the outset.

The accused has been arrested, and further investigation is underway. Authorities are continuing forensic examination and procedural formalities as part of the case.

The incident has drawn attention due to the alleged attempt to mislead investigators and the speed with which police uncovered the facts.
