Varanasi heatwave: Ganga water level drops, experts warn of deeper causes
Heatwave and reduced water flow expose sandbanks at Varanasi ghats as experts warn multiple factors are lowering Ganga levels.
Varanasi’s famous ghats are witnessing a striking transformation as falling water levels in the Ganga River expose broad stretches of sand and leave parts of the riverfront without their usual flow. Amid intense summer heat conditions, many locals dependent on the river say the change has become increasingly visible.
However, experts caution that rising temperatures alone do not explain the situation. According to river expert B D Tripathi, reduced water release from dams in Uttarakhand and diversion of river water through irrigation canals are also contributing factors.
