A new memorial space honouring Assam’s freedom fighters has opened to the public at the premises of Jorhat Central Jail. The garden, named Swaraj Garden, was inaugurated by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Spread across nearly 110 acres, the garden has been created as a tribute to the sacrifices made by the region’s freedom fighters during India’s struggle for independence.

Visitors to the garden can also see the historic prison where Assamese martyrs, Kushal Konwar and Pitambar Dev Goswami, were once held captive.

The jail complex holds particular historical significance as it houses the only gallows in Northeast India. It was here that Kushal Konwar was executed during the independence movement.

In addition to the memorial garden, the prison preserves several historical records and documents, highlighting India’s freedom struggle and the contributions made by people from Assam.

Officials say the garden aims to serve as a place of remembrance and an educational site for visitors interested in the region’s role in the fight for independence.
