South African cheetah Gamini delivers fourth cub at Kuno, India’s tally rises to 39
India’s cheetah reintroduction programme records another milestone as South African cheetah Gamini gives birth to her fourth cub at Kuno National Park.
A female cheetah translocated from South Africa has delivered her fourth cub at Kuno National Park, pushing India’s total cheetah population to 39, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav announced on Friday.
The cheetah, Gamini, was closely monitored by field staff and veterinary teams, who confirmed the presence of the fourth cub during intensive tracking operations inside the park.

Sharing the update on X, Yadav said all four cubs are healthy and progressing well. With this latest addition, India now has 39 cheetahs, including 28 cubs born on Indian soil since the reintroduction programme began.
Gamini was brought to India from South Africa under the ambitious cheetah reintroduction initiative launched in September 2022. The project aims to restore the population of the world’s fastest land animal in the country, where it had been declared extinct decades ago.
