Baby Punch moves from heartbreak to hope as Japan zoo story goes viral | VIDEO
A baby macaque named Punch, abandoned by his mother shortly after birth, became a global sensation after being seen hugging a soft toy
In a small zoo in Japan, a seven-month-old Japanese macaque named Punch captured global attention after footage showed him clinging to an orange stuffed toy. Punch, housed at Ichikawa City Zoo, was abandoned by his mother just days after birth and struggled to survive within a strict troop environment.
Without maternal care, zookeepers gave Punch a soft stuffed orangutan toy for comfort. The baby macaque became deeply attached to the toy, sleeping with it, hiding with it and carrying it everywhere. Older monkeys occasionally scolded him, but Punch continued holding onto the toy for emotional security.

The touching behaviour quickly went viral on social media platforms, attracting visitors from around the world. The surge in public interest led to increased footfall at the zoo, while a popular Swedish furniture company’s plush toy, similar to Punch’s companion, reportedly sold out in several international markets.
However, the zoo later had to control visitor entry to maintain peace within the macaque troop. Excess human presence risked disturbing the social structure of the animals.
Zoo officials now report positive behavioural progress in Punch’s development. Other macaques have started grooming him, and he has begun playing with monkeys of his age group. According to caretakers, Punch is gradually learning to eat independently, although he still sleeps holding his toy.
Animal behaviour experts say such attachment to objects can occur in orphaned primates as a substitute for maternal comfort. Over time, social integration with the troop is considered a positive sign of psychological and physical development.
The story of Punch has shifted from sadness to hope, symbolising resilience in animals raised without mothers. Zoo staff believe the macaque will continue adjusting to troop life while keeping his toy as a comfort object during the transition.
