No petrol, no problem: Horse helps Jharkhand teacher carry out Census work
A teacher in Jharkhand's Garhwa district has swapped his motorcycle for a horse to carry out Census 2027 duties amid fuel shortages linked to the West Asia crisis.
Field visits for house listing and household data collection under the first phase of Census 2027 began in Jharkhand on Saturday, but enumerators in some areas are facing challenges due to fuel shortages linked to the West Asia crisis.
In Garhwa district's Dhurki block, teacher and census worker Munna Prasad Gupta has switched to a horse instead of using his motorcycle, as fuel supplies are reportedly available only once a week.
Gupta said he was inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal to reduce fuel consumption and found the horse ride helpful in attracting villagers and children, making survey work easier.
Local officials praised his dedication and adaptability during difficult conditions.
Gupta plans to continue using the horse until the survey concludes.
