As the holy month of Ramzan approaches, markets in the Idukki district are witnessing a seasonal transformation, with shop shelves filling up with an unprecedented range of dates. Traders say more than 45 varieties have arrived in local markets, reflecting the deep cultural and religious significance the fruit holds during the fasting month.

For Muslims, dates are an integral part of Iftar — the evening meal that breaks the day-long fast. The practice is rooted in tradition and faith, making dates one of the most sought-after food items during Ramzan.

Merchants in Idukki note that most of their stocks have arrived directly from Middle Eastern countries, ensuring freshness and quality.

According to a shopekeeper, ‘’A wide variety of dates have arrived. We have around 14–15 varieties in hand, including Saudi items like Sukkari, as well as Mazafati, Ferrari, Mewara, Mashrook, and others. We also have more premium, higher-priced varieties available with us. We are welcoming Ramadan in a grand way with a wide variety of dates’’

Across Kerala, markets see a similar uptick in activity during this period, as families prepare for a month of fasting, prayer, and community gatherings. In India, Ramzan began on February 19 this year and will conclude with the festival of Eid-ul-Fitr.
