As Ramadan fasting begins, dates dominate local markets in Kozhikode, with imported varieties from Iran and premium Middle Eastern types leading in taste, quality and price

Ramadan preparations are visible across markets as demand for fasting-related food items increases. Dates remain the most important food during the fasting season, symbolising nutrition and tradition for those observing the fast.

Premium varieties such as Mabroom and Medjool are priced between Rs 900 and Rs 1500 per kilogram. These dates are considered superior in flavour and sweetness, but their high price limits mass purchase.
The most popular variety among buyers is Sukkary, known for its soft texture and natural sweetness. Sukkary dates are priced around Rs 250–300 per kilogram and are widely preferred for breaking the fast.
Dried dates, locally known as karakka, along with dates imported from Iran, are also in strong demand. These varieties are usually priced between Rs 200 and Rs 250 per kilogram.
Growth in dry fruit demand
Dry fruits are also seeing strong seasonal sales. Apricots, priced around Rs 400 per kilogram, and figs, priced close to Rs 900 per kilogram, are among the most sought-after items. Cashews and almonds remain popular choices, especially for household Ramadan preparations.
Fruit demand rises during fasting season
Watermelon has become a major refreshment choice during Ramadan. Prices have risen from about Rs 25 to Rs 30 per kilogram due to higher demand. Varieties such as Crimson Sweet and Sugar Baby are particularly popular.
Other fruits are also seeing price changes. Pineapple prices have increased from Rs 80 to between Rs 100 and Rs 120 per kilogram. Lemon prices range from Rs 100 to Rs 140 per kilogram. Papaya and grapes are also in steady demand as people look for hydration-friendly foods during fasting.
Overall, market trends show that Ramadan significantly influences fruit and dry fruit consumption patterns, with dates maintaining their central cultural and nutritional role during the fasting season.
