Air India AI-171 tragedy: Rescue teams remember chaotic aftermath of Ahmedabad aircraft disaster
One year after the Ahmedabad plane crash, rescuers recall the devastating scenes, scattered bodies, and challenges faced during rescue efforts
On June 12 last year, Air India flight AI-171, bound for London, crashed into the hostel complex of BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad moments after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The disaster claimed 241 lives on board and 19 on the ground, with only one passenger surviving.
Firefighters arriving at the site were confronted with intense flames, thick smoke, collapsed structures, and bodies scattered across the crash zone.
Divisional Fire Officer SB Jadeja said rescue teams worked alongside airport authorities, police, and emergency services to search through debris and extinguish the fire.
Fire Station Officer Vishnubhai Deshai said that he had never come across a similar situation before in his life, recalling how human remains were found scattered throughout the wreckage.
