There is always added scrutiny when the child of a superstar steps into the spotlight, and ‘Thudakkam’ carries that weight from its opening frame. As the acting debut of Vismaya Mohanlal, daughter of Malayalam icon Mohanlal, the film arrives with considerable expectations. Director Jude Anthany Joseph, however, does not rely solely on curiosity surrounding his lead actor. Instead, he builds an engaging action thriller that allows its newcomers to establish themselves while delivering the commercial highs audiences expect. 

Backed by Aashirvad Cinemas, ‘Thudakkam’ blends action, emotion and revenge into a narrative that gradually gathers momentum before culminating in a hard-hitting finale. Although the premise remains familiar, the film benefits from assured storytelling, strong technical craftsmanship and performances that elevate the material.

A familiar revenge tale with effective execution

At its heart, ‘Thudakkam’ revolves around a young woman whose ordinary life is upended by unforeseen circumstances, forcing her into a battle for survival. The screenplay follows a straightforward revenge-driven trajectory, but Jude ensures the narrative rarely loses its grip.

The first half patiently establishes the characters and conflict before the pace noticeably accelerates after the interval. From there, the film shifts into an engaging thriller filled with emotionally charged moments and well-staged confrontations. The climax embraces a more violent tone, making it clear that ‘Thudakkam’ aims to satisfy audiences looking for an unapologetically commercial entertainer.

Vismaya Mohanlal announces her arrival

For someone making her screen debut, Vismaya displays remarkable composure. She carries herself with confidence throughout the film. More importantly, she succeeds in portraying the emotional vulnerability and physical determination required of her character.

Her action sequences stand out as some of the film's biggest highlights. Whether facing emotional challenges or engaging in intense combat, she delivers a performance that feels committed rather than merely adequate. Several of her mass moments are designed to draw cheers, and they largely achieve that objective.

While there is still room for growth in terms of emotional depth, ‘Thudakkam’ presents Vismaya as a promising new addition to Malayalam cinema.

Aashish Joe Antony impresses as the antagonist

Aashish Joe Antony emerges as one of the film's pleasant surprises. His antagonist carries an unsettling presence from the outset, and he brings enough menace to make the conflict believable. Rather than being reduced to a one-dimensional villain, his performance gives the story additional tension.

The supporting cast, including Sai Kumar, Manoj K Jayan, Bobby Kurian, Ganesh Kumar, Miya George and Jaffar Idukki, provide dependable performances that strengthen the narrative without overshadowing its leads.

Mohanlal's cameo in the film is brief but impactful. Without overstaying its welcome, the cameo adds emotional weight and gives fans a memorable moment that naturally fits within the story.

Action, music and visuals lift the experience

One of the film's biggest strengths lies in its technical departments.

Jakes Bejoy's background score consistently enhances the tension, particularly during the action sequences. Rather than overwhelming the scenes, the music complements the emotional beats and amplifies the film's mass appeal.

The stunt choreography by Yannick Ben and Stunt Silva deserves special mention. The action is energetic, stylish and executed with precision, producing several whistle-worthy moments without feeling repetitive.

Jomon T John's cinematography also contributes significantly to the atmosphere. His visual composition balances intimate emotional scenes with expansive action set pieces, giving the film a polished cinematic look.

Not without flaws

Despite its strengths, ‘Thudakkam’ is not entirely free of shortcomings.

Some portions of the screenplay rely on familiar commercial conventions, and a few women empowerment moments feel overly emphasised rather than organically woven into the story.

These issues, however, do little to derail the film's overall momentum.

Backed by impressive action choreography, atmospheric music and striking visuals, ‘Thudakkam’ delivers a satisfying theatrical experience.
