Thiruvananthapuram: CPM is in discussions on the need for increased women's representation in the leadership of the Kerala Chalachitra Academy. Despite being formed a quarter of a century ago, the academy has always been led by male chairpersons.

The call for a woman to be appointed to the position has surfaced following the release of the Hema Committee report and the resignation of Ranjith following sexual assault allegations. The women's association has proposed film editor Bina Paul, who previously served as vice-chairperson and artistic director of the International Film Festival, for the role. The Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) also raised this suggestion.

There is also support for Deepika Sudarshan, who has worked as the artistic director of the film festival. The final decision will depend on the CPM state secretariat, the Chief Minister, and the Culture Minister. The party’s connection and stance will also play a major role in the appointment process.

Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women (NCW) on Saturday sought the complete release of the Hema Committee Report, following the findings of the report hit the Malayalam film industry with sexual abuse allegations.

The Commission stated that it is committed to furthering its efforts in addressing these matters with the appropriate authorities to ensure that the rights of women are upheld and that a safe, equitable working environment is fostered within the industry.
