Kochi: Kerala Minister for Cultural Affairs Saji Cherian on Saturday clarified that the change in the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy leadership was part of a routine administrative procedure following the completion of the governing body's tenure. The minister denied that the decision was linked to any personal views expressed by actor Prem Kumar, who had been serving as chairman-in-charge at the time.

Cherian said Prem Kumar’s allegations of double standards stemmed from a “misunderstanding” and stressed that the government respects the right of cultural activists in government institutions to express independent opinions. He noted that statements by both Prem Kumar and Kerala Sahitya Akademi chairman K Satchidanandan are considered purely personal opinions, and the government does not follow a policy of sidelining individuals for such expressions.

The minister added that Prem Kumar’s performance as vice chairman and later as interim chairman was “excellent and satisfactory.” He said the new committee, with Oscar-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty as chairman, was constituted purely after the expiry of the previous term, and Prem Kumar had congratulated Pookutty on his appointment.

Cherian emphasised that the replacement of a committee after the expiry of its tenure is a standard administrative procedure and not a dismissal. Any communication lapses regarding the change would be examined, and grievances would be addressed through discussion if needed.

Prem Kumar had earlier expressed confusion over his removal from the chairmanship in October 2025, just before the announcement of the state film awards, despite overseeing preparations for the 30th edition of the International Film Festival of Kerala. He highlighted that in contrast, Satchidanandan continued as Sahitya Akademi chairman despite making statements critical of the ruling party and government.

The minister reiterated that the leadership change did not reflect any political bias, and the government continues to value the contributions of all cultural activists associated with state institutions.
