When Vaikom Bhasi, better known to television audiences as O.V. Rajesh, decided to step away from comedy and explore dubbing, he had little idea that it would lead to a state award. Bhasi was honoured with the Kerala State Film Award for Best Dubbing Artist for his performance as the voice of ‘Voodoo’, the animated character in Mohanlal’s directorial debut Barroz.

According to the award jury, Bhasi’s voice perfectly matched the personality and expressions of Voodoo, enhancing the film’s emotional appeal. The actor said the award came as a complete surprise.

Director T.K. Rajeev Kumar, who collaborated with Mohanlal on Barroz, first noticed Bhasi through his television comedy show. Impressed by his energy and timing, Kumar invited him to try dubbing for the character. After recording a few scenes, the director shared them with Mohanlal, who immediately approved Bhasi’s performance.

“Mohanlal liked the voice very much,” Bhasi said, recalling the moment. Since the role involved an animated character, the dubbing sessions took place over several days, rather than continuously.

Bhasi, who was named Best Comedian at the 2022 Television Awards, has been performing in television and stage comedy for over two decades. He lives in Vaikom with his wife Sheeja and their son Ayush.

Vaikom Bhasi’s journey from a television comedian to an award-winning dubbing artist marks a new chapter in his versatile career. Known for his humour and expressive delivery on stage, Bhasi ventured into dubbing for Barroz under the direction of T.K. Rajeev Kumar.

The film, marking Mohanlal’s first directorial project, features a blend of live-action and animation, where Bhasi’s character ‘Voodoo’ plays a pivotal role. His ability to bring out both warmth and mischief in his voice reportedly made the animated character more relatable.

The Kerala State Film Awards jury praised his nuanced modulation and clarity. Bhasi credited both Mohanlal and Rajeev Kumar for trusting him with the role and giving him the freedom to experiment.

With over 20 years of experience in the entertainment industry, Bhasi continues to be a familiar face in Malayalam television. His latest recognition highlights how talent and versatility can transcend genres — from comedy sketches to cinematic storytelling.
