Vikrant Massey has amassed a huge fan following in recent years, especially since his last theatrical release, ‘12th Fail,’ which went on to become a sleeper box office hit. His recent OTT release, ‘Phir Aayi Haseen Dillruba’ has also garnered mostly positive reviews. Now, Vikrant is gearing up for the premiere of his next release, titled ‘Sector 36,’ on Netflix.

Co-starring Deepak Dobriyal, ‘Sector 36’ is a crime thriller inspired by true crimes. It revolves around the sudden disappearance of children from a slum in Delhi that leads a police officer to find the truth behind it, unraveling some dark secrets. The film, which marks the directorial debut of Aditya Nimbalkar, will stream exclusively on Netflix from September 13. Ahead of the film’s release, here are our recommendations of films that were inspired by real-live crimes.

Talvar (2015)

Directed by Meghna Gulzar and written by Vishal Bhardwaj, ‘Talvar’ features Irrfan Khan, Konkona Sen Sharma, and Neeraj Kabi in leading roles. It is a film that shows the unsolved double murder mystery of Aarushi Talwar and Hemraj Banjade in 2008 in Noida. Aarushi was found dead at her residence in May 2008. Initially, the house help, Hemraj, was accused of murder, but his body was found the next day. Police suspected Aarushi’s parents to have killed both. The case since then has been an inspiration to several films and series. 

Main Aur Charles (2015)

This fictitious crime thriller is inspired by the life and crimes of serial killer Charles Sobhraj, who was also known as the ‘Bikini Killer.’ The film is said to be shown from police officer Amod Kamath’s perspective, the man who investigated the case. Directed by Prawaal Raman, it starred Randeep Hooda in the leading role. Upon its release in the theatres, the movie failed to click with the critics and the viewers.

No One Killed Jessica (2011)

Rajkumar Gupta wrote and directed the film which is based on the Jessica Lal murder case. Starring Rani Mukerji and Vidya Balan, the film received critical appreciation for its direction, screenplay, and performances of Mukerji and Balan. It shows how a young bartender was shot dead by a politician’s son and how her sister fought a battle to bring justice to the deceased.

The Stoneman Murders (2009)

In the 1980s, people in Bombay (now Mumbai) were in deep fear when an unidentified serial killer murdered about 23 homeless people. The serial killer would stone people to death in their sleep. It marked the first feature film directorial debut of Manish Gupta, starring Kay Kay Menon as Sanjay and Arbaz Khan as Kedar. While a suspended Sanjay tries to unofficially solve the mysterious murders of the homeless, Kedar, who is officially handling the case, is more interested in winning against Sanjay than finding the serial killer.
