Tamil star Vijay Sethupathi’s powerful performance in 'Maharaja' has captured the audience's attention, making the film a major hit both in Tamil Nadu and beyond. The film quickly became the actor’s first Rs 100-crore blockbuster and is now making waves internationally.

Released on June 18 on Netflix, Maharaja has gone on to conquer Taiwan, where it ranked in the top 10 non-English films. It maintained this position for six consecutive weeks, further cementing its global appeal. The film also garnered a lot of attention on various online platforms in Taiwan, with discussions around its memorable moments and the performances of Vijay Sethupathi and others.

The film, written and directed by Nithilan Swaminathan, also features Anurag Kashyap in a key role, alongside a stellar cast including Natarajan Subramaniam, Bharathiraja, Abhirami, Mamtha Mohandas, Singampuli, and Kalki. Produced by Sudhan Sundaram and Jagadeesh Palanisamy under Passion Studios and The Root banners, Maharaja has earned widespread acclaim for its gripping storyline and performances.

Maharaja wins heart in China

Meanwhile, Maharaja was released in China last week, making history as the first Indian film to be screened for Chinese audiences following the normalization of ties between the two countries. This comes after last month's agreement to resolve the standoff in Eastern Ladakh, marking a significant moment in international cinema exchange.

State-run Global Times reported that the film currently holds a high rating of 8.7/10 on Chinese movie review site Douban and is regarded as one of the highest-rated Indian films in recent years.

Indian films especially Aamir Khan's Three Idiots, Dangal and Secret Superstar have become a major success in China in recent years as the themes largely resonated with the Chinese audiences and earned a significant amount of revenue.

Khan has become a household name in China. China has about 86,000 theatres all over the country, the highest in the world.
