Tamil film producers' organisations have announced that no new Tamil films will be released in theatres from September 1 amid a dispute with theatre owners and distributors

The Tamil film industry is heading towards a major release crisis after producers' organisations announced that no new Tamil films will hit theatres from September 1.
The Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC) and the Tamil Nadu Active Producers Association have jointly taken the decision following a dispute over new conditions proposed by theatre owners and distributors.
The organisations have also decided to halt film shoots as well as post-production work if the issue is not resolved.
Dispute over eight-week OTT window
The latest dispute centres on the theatrical-to-OTT release window. The Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association and the Distributors Association have proposed that films released in theatres should only be allowed to premiere on OTT platforms after eight weeks.
They have also sought a written agreement from producers accepting this condition. In addition, the theatre owners and distributors have said they will not make advance payments for new films.
The producers' organisations have opposed these decisions, arguing that the conditions were imposed unilaterally without any discussions with them. According to the producers, they cannot accept decisions taken by the theatre owners and distributors without consulting the organisations representing them.
Shoots and post-production work may also stop
The dispute could extend beyond theatrical releases. If a solution is not reached, the producers' organisations have decided to stop film productions and post-production activities completely. Such a move could have a wider impact on the Tamil film industry, which provides employment to thousands of workers across different departments.
The producers' organisations have therefore called on the Tamil Nadu government to intervene and find an urgent solution to the dispute. They have stressed that a prolonged standoff could seriously affect the livelihoods of the many workers who depend on the film industry.
Several September releases face uncertainty
The decision has already put several films scheduled to release in the first half of September in doubt.
Karthi's ‘Sardar 2’, which is scheduled for release on September 10, is among the films that could be affected.
Other upcoming titles caught in the uncertainty include GV Prakash Kumar's ‘Immortal’, Soori's ‘Mandadi’ and Arulnithi's ‘Demonte Colony 3’.
With no new Tamil films expected to be released from September 1, if the decision remains in place, the release plans for these films could be disrupted.
Big-budget films could also be affected
If the dispute continues, its impact could stretch well beyond the September release calendar. Several major Tamil films planned for the second half of 2026 could also face difficulties with their release schedules.
These include Rajinikanth's ‘Jailer 2’, Dhanush's ‘OM: Chapter 1 – Udhiram: The Blood Wood’, Vijay Sethupathi's ‘Baththa’ and ‘Sigma’, which marks Jason Sanjay's directorial debut.
The uncertainty around theatrical releases could therefore create problems for some of the year's bigger Tamil projects as well.
