Chennai: The Tamil Film Producers Association has temporarily withdrawn its decision to go on strike from September 1 after holding discussions with Minister Rajmohan.

The producers had planned to stop all film-related activities from September 1, including the release of new films, ongoing shooting and post-production work. The decision to put the strike on hold came after the minister assured the association that steps would be taken to address its concerns.

According to office-bearers of the association, Rajmohan also assured them that he would consult Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay and work towards finding a permanent solution to the issues raised by the producers.

Why did the producers plan a strike?

The proposed strike was linked to a new condition being sought by the Tamil Nadu Film Distributors Association and the Theatre Owners Association.

The two bodies had asked producers to give a written undertaking that films released in theatres from September 1 would be made available on OTT platforms only after completing eight weeks in cinemas.

They also said that theatres would be permitted to screen a film only if its producers provided such a letter.

The producers objected to the decision, saying it had been taken unilaterally without consulting their association. In protest, they announced that no new Tamil films would be released from September 1 and that film production activities would also come to a halt.

Producers question eight-week OTT window

The producers have also questioned why such a rule should be introduced specifically in Tamil Nadu when similar regulations have not been implemented in other South Indian states.

At present, Tamil and other South Indian films generally make their OTT debut around four weeks after their theatrical release.

The proposed eight-week gap would therefore represent a significant change to the current release pattern.

Following their meeting with Rajmohan, the producers decided to temporarily withdraw the proposed strike, based on the assurance that the matter would be taken up for further discussion.

For now, the proposed September 1 shutdown has been put on hold, with further developments expected after the government holds discussions with the stakeholders involved.
